What is evidence-based teaching?
We want you to ‘have a life’: your students learn, but you are not stressed. In this section
we show how we arrived at the Six-Steps approach based on five major studies.
Welcome to the world of evidence!
Respected professions like medicine, archeology, engineering and law use research to inform best practice. We can base our teaching practices on robust evidence so that we’re using the best methods for our students. Evidence-based teaching is just effective teaching. How do you know what research to look at?
We’ve focused on educational attainment research. You need to be careful when you look for research, since we’re naturally drawn to research that matches our own point of view. It’s more objective to have a system to find and analyse research, and that’s exactly what researchers do with something called a meta-study.What's a meta-study?
It’s a review of the research available that gives a big picture overview. They’re also known as systematic research reviews or meta-analyses. The research team selects hundreds of studies using specific criteria and looks for patterns and themes. What evidence is used on this site?
All the info on this site is based on robust research. There are 100s of meta-studies just in the field of educational attainment. We’ve focused on three major compilations of meta-studies into classroom experiments, and two from the cognitive sciences.
The two areas complement each other nicely:
* classroom evidence tells us what works*
* cognitive science tells us why
